My Reaction to Coronation Street's "Outing" of Sophie and Sian
On August 30th 2010’s episode of Coronation Street the characters of Sophie Webster and Sian Powers were ‘outed’ by Claire Peacock infront of the entire street as they made their way to Roy and Hayley wedding.
While I cannot say that the S&S storyline has been my favorite, the way in which these characters were ‘outed’ felt like nothing more than a plot device used to push other storylines further.
Coronation Street had the chance to tell a storyline that would have gripped the nation, while actually HELPING those struggling with their sexual identity to find a way to express themselves by following in S&S’s suit. Now the potential for this storyline has been somewhat wrecked and any lasting impact was shoved to the side for a quick ‘gasp’ and shock as everyone in town heard their ‘dirty little secret’.
Now I will admit that the soap quickly 'down played' the reveal to make it look like Claire was a liar and that S&S would 'never' do something like that, but isn't that just as bad, if not worse for the storyline?
So obviously I am disappointed in Corrie, but maybe you feel differently. What is your take on S&S’s storyline so far? Do you agree with the way the writers exposed the couple, or are you as outraged as I am over this pointless plot device?

The S/S Storyline Is Amazing...
ReplyDeleteIts Showing How Easily One Slip Up Can Punish You...
With Siophie, Them Kissing On Someones Sofa Has Shown Them 2 Things,
People Accept This Lifestyle, Hence Claire NOT Going Mental
And That Claire Doesnt Slam A Door :/
They Did What Anyone'll Do: Deny
They're Still Getting Over The Fact They're Gay, So Obviously They'll Deny It...
I Dont Agree With Anything You've Said...
You Should Ask Someone Who's A Lesbian What They Think Of The Storyline :/
This storyline is amazing. The storyline has and will continue to help people in similar situations. And as for the potential of this story line being wrecked i completely disagree with you, now that they are 'out' i feel this storyline is only truly starting to begin, there are so many aspects to look at now they are 'out' and this will benefit people in this 'situation' even more. And as a longterm corrie fan i must say this storyline has benefited the soap massively. so basically yes This storyline is one of the best ive seen recently! :)
ReplyDeleteI totally disagree with you and agree with the other comments, this story line has been great! and although i am a huge soap fan, i am becomin bored of how they often drift into a story that has no real relevance to the audience, simply to shock the nation. but this is real, this happens to teenagers and its very difficult for them. this scene and what followed showed how people react an how some can be very openly against it and will publicly out them but it also shows how others are willing to accept people for who they are. It also leads onto the girls having to finally come out.
ReplyDeletei think the best thing about the story is that seeing people out the girls for being gay will show the audience that there realy is nothing wrong with being gay or a lesbian and maybe will allow more people sat at home to accept it themselves if they find that a friend or family member is gay.
Sorry if that sounds like im having a go but i know quite a few gay people of both genders and also have very homophobic family members so feel strongly about it all haha :)
See when I wrote this post the last episode I had seen was August 30th part 1, and right before Sophie fully 'came out' to her dad by her own choice.
ReplyDeleteI do still stand by my comments that the 'outing' was done in a bad way. I think it would have made more of an impact had Sophie came out to her dad maybe first, and her still be affraid that her mom would reject her, and then let the fall out come from 'real life' and not from a shocking 'party' outing.
Clare did it not to explain away the situation, but out of pure spite. It wasn't like Clare sat down with Sophies parents and explained what she saw, she flat out told everyone in the street what Sophie and Sian were doing, and she knew that it was not the right thing to do.
As for the 'rest' of the storyline, I think it is playing out right, and now that everything is out in the open it will probably help out a lot of people struggling, but I think it could have been handled in a much better fashion and been a lot more realistic. I mean really how many gay/lesbian people do you know that got outed infront of everyone they know by a person who was just trying to take a jab at their mother? LOL I know its a soap and not supposed to be entierly 'realistic' but I just had high hopes for this storyline and the coming out portion, and I just feel a little let down, thats all.
Anyways thanks for all of your comments and please continue to check out the blog and disagree with me! I really enjoy reading and commenting so lets keep this discussion going :).
