Will General Hospital Be Cancelled To Make Room For Katie Couric on ABC?

TMZ has just reported that Katie Couric is thisclose to signing a $20 million deal with ABC. Apparently, Katie would be doing nighttime specials for ABC News and 20/20 and would also get..."a 1-hour, 5-day-a-week syndicated talk show that would begin in September, 2012." Uh-Oh.

Could this be the end of General Hospital? The final nail in the coffin of ABC soaps? Not necessarily. As the folks at TMZ point out, "ABC is also realistic, believing that one of its new 2011 syndicated shows will fail, leaving room for K.C."

I feel sick.

Update: Just wanted to add that on April 22nd, we reported/speculated that GH would be off the air by September 2012. Read about it Here

Update2: To read a more detailed piece about Couric's possible deal with ABC from Deadline.com, Click Here (again in this piece it's pointed out that this may not necessarily mean the end of GH.)
*thanks to my twitter peeps OLTLfan4life and xxAnne8xx for letting me know about the Deadline article :)

  1. I remember reading your tweet that night :( I went and sadly told the groups if we could get half the fans on one of the official pages to fight we could really make an impact!

  2. And because of people like you we *have* made an impact! It's definitely not the end, but it's still depressing the heck out of me :(

  3. me too as I sit here finishing my 2nd blog ever, I fell asleep writing it last night. I've already got people calling ABC about GH's possible cancellation, what a huge mistake this would be on ABC's part right now. GH has the biggest fanbase if we can get them to really join us we'll be unstoppable.

  9. If soaps are to survive in America, they need to look at how British soaps are done. Scenes go quickly. Fast cutaways. And 30 minute formats instead of an hour.

All American soaps do a routine format of where two characters continue a conversation in one room for basically the entire show, cut up in between similarly staged storylines where again you have two or more characters caught up in a script that goes on for an entire hour.

Check out Emmerdale, Eastenders and Coronation Street for a half hour that goes by at a good clip and making you want more instead of yawning.

  10. "Anonymous" - we at Denial Island couldn't agree with you more! We were on skype when I saw this message and we discussed it. You're right, the Brit shows do seem to be more quickly paced than the US shows. For instance, there's this unspoken rule in US daytime that says you can't have two characters talking and then have one of those characters arriving somewhere else in the next scene - well why not? The Aussie soap Neighbours does that all the time - you'd be surprised how much that moves things along. There's no reason characters should be stuck in the same place for most, or all, of an episode.

Though on the other side of it, there are times when I appreciate a long conversation between two characters - when things are said btwn them that moves a story along or if it's particularly well written. But that doesn't happen often.

I love Emmerdale, EastEnders and Coronation Street! I never thought a half hour was enough time for a good soap but the UK and Aussie shows proved me wrong.

    Thanks for the comment!

  12. I have never connected to Marie Couric. I hope she does not end up with a daytime show. I may have to switch to another channel.
