Is John McBain Growing On Me?

Something must be in my kool-aid this week, because I think I am actually warming up to the character of John McBain (Michael Easton) on ABC's One Life To Live.

I don't exactly know why, but while i was watching this weeks episodes I couldn't deny the fact that John McBain wasn't bothering me, and to tell the truth he hasn't been bothering me for awhile now. I think I am generally enjoying the character, and might actually, possibly, maybe, rooting for the character and Natalie (Melissa Archer)!

I may be crazy, I may be off my rocker, but it's just the way I am feeling. So am I kicked off to a secluded part of Denial Island? Or is anyone with me?

  1. I actually like John. Firstly, he's Todd's nemesis so that right there scores him major points in my book, lol. He's a bit morose and can use a haircut, but I'm okay with him, plus I've always liked Michael Easton (all the way back to his stint on DAYS).

I like John and Natalie too, but what I hate is that Marty is the odd one out. Carlivati doesn't seem to know what to do with Marty...so I'm worried he's going to make her the bad one just to pimp John/Natalie.

  2. I really do not understand the point to the Marty character. I know she has all of this history with OLTL, and she (key word here) SHOULD (Crap Damon from WLS is going to yell at me now hu?) be an amazing character, but I feel like that is all she is going to be as well, and that sucks.

There needs to be a point to the character other then "The bad guy" for the John/Natalie pairing.

Would you be against a Trevor Saint John/Marty pairing if they brought back RH as Todd? I personally would love that lol, but hey i liked Tarty's rapemance chemistry :P

  3. Well the thing is, and I could be wrong, I don't think Ron Carlivati will ever do justice to Marty as a character. To me, she's smart and tough and should be more than just a victim or a "spoiler" in a triangle. Let's say they made Trevor another character - even if he's not Todd he's still a psycho douchebag, so Marty would just end up being victimized by him again anyway.

I thought Trevor and Susan had good chemistry, and she and Roger had amazing chemistry. But chemistry doesn't always have to turn into romance. You can keep characters in each other's orbits, capitalize on the chem, and keep the tension between them, but just not make it romantic.

  4. Good point.

So how would you go about saving the character?

Things that come to mind for me would be to give the character a backbone, from there you can move her into a bigger storyline where maybe she has to come work for the LLPD and all of the sudden she gets kidnapped or something (yes playing the victim card for a second) but then SAVES her self.

From that moment on the character of Marty starts to build herself up as a STRONG woman who has survived a gang rape, survived Todd Manning, and is able to provide for herself without the need for a man.

(Then you have Zack and Kendell come to town and Marty can play a third wheel to Zendelle lol)

  6. I LOVE John McBain and Michael Easton. The big problem with this character is that they have had huge problems with getting his pairings right. Evangeline was a great character and I know that pairing was popular, but IMHO John needs to be with someone a bit fiestier. I think when characters are both kind of mellow it is so vanilla (think Jason and Eliesabeth on GH). If you have a character that tends to be stoic, I think you have to pair that character with someone vibrant. Jolie was just starting to become when MA went into contract talks and the writers screwed the pooch with the storyline trying to keep things fluid in case she didnt re-sign. Then came the Jarty pairing with the woefully miscast CC. BORING. Blair and John were fire, but the dumped them in favor of Original recipe Marty/John and again had stoic John matched up with relatively mellow Marty. That just DOESNT work.

What they do with Marty depends largely on TK IMHO. Is he returning and if so as what character. I actually would love to see RH back as real todd (to be paired with Blair) and then having a deprogramming faux Todd, who was actually Walker Lawrence. I think that would give them a real opportunity to make both "todds" less of an asshat.
