So Many Soaps, So Little Time

Okay, I have a major dilemma soap peeps! While I would love to watch all the soaps every day (even the crappy ones), having a FT job and going to school makes it impossible. I have to decide which soaps I’m going to watch and which ones I’ll be dropping for now. This is so hard because I have a long & tortured history with each show. I know I’m going to keep watching EastEnders on YouTube, but other than that, I’m not sure. I’d love to hear your comments on the shows – what you like, what you hate. Here’s a list of shows w/ Pros and Cons. Help me decide, lol!

Pros: Pratt is GONE. David is one of my favorite villains. A mostly great cast.

Cons: Too many actors who still haven’t learned to act. Yet another Colby recast that isn’t working. Jesse and Angie are the only couple I’m invested in. The memory of Ryrica is burned into my brain forever.

Pros: Great cast. The show is ending soon – okay, that’s not a “Pro” but it’s a good reason to watch.

Cons: The Mick/James story – WTF?? Martha needs to come back as Lily…seriously. One weird trauma after another for Luke and Noah. I haven’t watched in a loooong time, and I haven’t really missed it.

Pros: The always fabulous Susan Flannery! Half the cast is great. Usually very entertaining. Only a half hour long.

Cons: I don’t care what they tell me, Ridge is not desirable and women would never fight over him…ever. The Logan women. Pretty kids that can’t act. Being constantly reminded of the dangers of plastic surgery (Hunter – WHY???)

Pros: Nostalgia – Of the shows still on the air, this is the one I’ve been watching the longest. Victor’s zingers. Hope/Bo/Carly triangle. Drool-worthy men. The possibility they’ll someday bring back my beloved Billy Warlock (Frankie).

Cons: Melanie Layton makes me want to stuff my ears with cotton and stick a hot poker in my eye. Bye-Bye Vets. Younger actors that can’t act. Dialogue that's painful to listen to. Did I mention Melanie Layton?

Pros: JaSam! Sam! Kelly Monaco! Terrific cast, a show with the fewest “weak” links in terms of actors. Younger actors that can actually act. The possibility they’ll someday bring back my beloved Billy Warlock (AJ). When GH is good, it’s really good.
(*note: for JaSam fans out there, I recommend
JaSam Radio on BlogTalk Radio. You can listen live and participate in the chat room or listen to the shows later. It’s a lot of fun :) Their twitter is @JaSamRadio1 )

Cons: When GH is bad, it’s really bad. The blatant disrespect TPTB have for women: female characters, actresses and viewers. Plot holes you can drive a truck through. Missed opportunities and constantly wasting wonderful actors. I'm so tired of Sonny's Magic P*nis and Super Sperm. Elizabeth Webber probably won’t be killed off anytime soon.

Pros: FAB cast of veterans that are actually used. My massive crush on Brian Kerwin. Ripple-effect storytelling. It’s usually last in the ratings – not a “Pro” but I feel like I should support it.

Cons: Too many violent creeps/rapists running around town in the past few years. Todd, the degenerate pig, is their “romantic lead” and I’m supposed to believe women would fight over him?? Ron Campivati’s writing just goes too far for me sometimes. I haven’t watched in awhile and I only miss it a little.

Pros: They use vets! Doug Davidson is Killing It! No matter what, there are usually two stories that have me riveted (right now it’s Patty/Emily and Adam vs. Everyone). The possibility they’ll someday bring back my beloved Billy Warlock (Ben) – yeah okay, that one’s a stretch, lol.

Cons: A few younger actors that can’t act (though they seem to be fixing that). Some of the couples and characters are Snoreville!

Tough decision. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the shows!!

  1. Melanie you crack me up great assessments of the strengths and weaknesses of each show. You know you are not allowed to quit GH and B&B now has the fabu SJB in addition to SF. It pains me, but I say dump All My Kids - Pratt may be gone, but the show is still often unwatchable. VI makes it tolerable but even he cant save a show single handedly. The only down side is you will miss the last days of David Canary, and you know I think he is always a treat.

  3. Okay Mel, its time to go soap by soap--

    AMC-

    Spot on

    ATWT- Again spot on

    B&B--

Whatcha talking about Willis? Zac Conroy is on that show, and he is a 'pretty kid' and he can ACT better then a handful of Veteran's.

    Days-

.....I still think its a decent show...

    GH-

I think you kinda got that one spot on, when its good its good, when its bad its BADDDDDDDD

    OLTL-

ReRon Campavati to the rescue! Right?..

    Y&R--

    *nods*

Okay so here are my choices and reasons behind it for you-

    ATWT-

Its the final months of this show, so while it is painful because of piss poor writing, it is the final days, and we need to be able to watch it and say good bye to this much beloved show.

    EastEnders-

ITS EAST FREAKING ENDERS, enough said! ...okay maybe not. Yes the show gets dark, yes the show does stupid things under the current regime, but the current regime is leaving, and it will be interesting to see the change in the show once Brian "The SoapG" Kirkwood returns to soaps :)

    General Hospital (Optional)-

I think you really enjoy GH when it is GOOD, so maybe right now would be a good time to check it out?

    Home and Away-

ITS HOME AND AWAY! LOL, i love it, its one of my favorite shows on television period, but I know its not everyone's so I won't heavily pimp it....okay not any heavier then i already have.

    Y&R (In May/June)-

Okay I am dating this one, I think you should tune into Y&R once all the recast join the show, this way you will not be completely frustrated with the piss poor acting on top of crappy writing :)

Anyways keep up the good work you soap opera babbler you!

  4. I think you should watch GH there is a really good story coming with the Kris abuse storyline , a real family drama that focus on woman...
From what I here it is going to be really good....

  5. I saw keep watching OLTL for sure. Even though Days and GH can be boring and not worth watching sometimes, I would still watch. I don't watch the other shows, so I couldn't say which to watch and which not, although, I'd have to go with the consesus and definitely dump AMC.

  6. Okay Mel. Once again, we agree with a lot here...

AMC: MAYBE: Show kicked ass for me for a long time. When they killed off Greenlee then had Kendall sleep with Ryan a week later...that was it. Gone. AMC once again has a probationary season pass on my TIVO now that Greenlee returned, but I want Kendall to come back from vacay!

ATWT: NO: Started watching as a tiny tot. So many talented peeps. Elizabeth Hubbard was my all-time favorite villain. After writers turned MB's Lily into a desperate diet pill pushing loon, I had to say goodbye. I've tuned in from time to time, but the writing is ridiculous. Just makes me sad & missing the golden years when Hal was alive & Doug Marland too. Sorry to see such an important part of soap history leave the air & will tune in for the final episode as I did for GL, but I refuse to remember my beautiful soap the way it is written now. My vote is to remember it the way it was at it's best, and just tune in for final epi.

B&B: NO: This is the only soap I can claim actually watching since it's FIRST AIR DATE! For that reason, B&B will always hold a special place in my heart. However, I stopped watching this show years ago. I've tuned in a few times since my beloved SjB first aired. I love her, but B&B is still too over-dramatic for me. Can't stand Ridge or Jack Wagner's character. So, I do not watch regularly & cannot recommend it. I'll still check in on SjB & RH from time to time tho.

DOOL: MAYBE: This was my first NBC cheat against my long-time CBS only dedicated soap viewing. Became a fan when Bo & Hope returned to Salem. Loved Billie's character & Austin & Carrie. FLOVE Victor. Still, I stopped watching a long time ago other than occasional tune-ins. Acting & story lines are just not my cup of tea anymore. You seem to enjoy this show tho, so I'd say keep it as a contender along w/AMC.

GH: YES, YES & YES: Now, if you know me by my tweets at all, you KNOW what I think. Lol. This show MUST remain on the TIVO season pass! The flaws you pointed out are accurate, but when GH is good...there ain't nothin better. Period. The END. Okay. I lied. I'm not done...not only is GH where it's at as far as American soaps go...I still believe it is one of the few mostly well-written soaps EVEN considering it's poor utilization of cast & allowing the show to revolve around Sonny. I believe there's still hope fan support will wake GUZA up to use all of the gold. GH is the only definite "no-brainer you cannot possibly stop watching" for me. ONLY soap that hasn't lost me as a total fan yet. Besides, it would hurt my heart not to have this in common with ya since we agree on so much of the show. Lol. Cool to have you as a fellow GH/JaSam fan.
Full Disclosure: GH is #1 on my TIVO Season Pass list right above One Tree Hill.

OLTL: NO: Never followed as a fan. Caught bits & pieces over the years -enough that I know Gigi is trying to adopt Sierra & Todd is still an ass. I'll admit, I do like Tea sp? & Jessica -sometimes. There are some funny zingers occas, but it s/l goes too far for me...a lot. Psycho Mitch trying to impregnate his daughter that is only his daughter cuz he raped her mother? I mean, EW! Even by soap standards, this is too ew for me. It'll continue to play in bg, but I'll never be a real fan and can't recommend you keep this on your list.

Y&R: YES: My 1st daytime love. Aw. Even tho I can still watch this show only once a month & still know everything that is going on. Lol. Slowest progressing stories...ever. Gave me whiplash to watch AMC & GH at first. Still, I think it's one of the best soaps left. It is my 2nd choice as a keeper right after GH.

Hope my ramblings helped. Back to twitterverse for me. I'll look for you on JaSamRadio1 tonight -I'll be logged in as: imgoodbackup : )

  7. Anonymous/EET: Thanks! I'm leaning towards GH and B&B. AMC definitely has a long way to go before it's good again, but I find it hard to give up VI. I'll definitely tune in for David C's last eps!

Inbal/GH Lover: Somehow I knew you would encourage me to stick with GH :) I would love it if they focused on the women more. And you mentioned family drama, I do have to say...while I'm not a fan of Sonny's I do find the conflict with his children interesting. Thanks for reading and commenting!!!

Nic: Okay, so your vote is OLTL. That's a tough one!! Todd makes me want to vomit, lol! But if I start watching, then I'll be able to comment on your OLTL blog more :)

  8. You are giving up GH Mel?? Say it aint so.

  9. ETT she won't..

Mel this family drama is about woman, we will see Alexis Sam together helping Kris, HL on tweeter said that Sam will be her big sister helping her
For me that Story sounds good and I do hope that Sam will be the one pushing Kris to tell the truth

  10. imgoodbackup, we agree on so much!! Where to start?? Yes, the Ryan/Kendall thing was awful (and made me think of the Kendall/Aiden hook up when they thought Greenlee & Zach were dead, for all of two seconds.) There were times in the past year that I felt AMC was the worst soap I had *ever* seen (and that's saying a lot!)

ATWT: I love Elizabeth Hubbard!! And Hal... :( Do you know when the actor passed away and they had the character die on the show, I had those episodes on my DVR for almost two years before I could watch them. I was so upset. I loved Hal and Ben Hendrickson.

B&B: I have such a love/hate relationship with this show, lol! And it's usually Susan Flannery that keeps me coming back. I was thrilled when RH came back and SJB joined the show, but since they're not Forresters or Logans, I wonder how long they'll be around. I liked Jack's character when he first joined the show, but they've changed him a lot. I especially liked when he and Susan would go toe-to-toe.

DOOL: I love Bo and Hope and loved Billie, Austin, Victor and Carrie. But the show just isn't "my" show anymore. When I watch it, I feel like it's almost a spinoff of the original DAYS (DAYS: TNG). Hard to explain... but I started watching around 1986, so it's hard to let go of, lol

GH: Guza is soooo capable of greatness. If he finds his mojo again, they'd have me for good. And you know I can't live without my JaSam!! btw, I loved OTH! But I was really behind, so I started getting them on DVD. I'm about to start Season 4 :)

OLTL: UGH. I love Roscoe Born, but I couldn't stand to watch Mitch terrorize everyone. To me, that's not entertainment. It's just disgusting.

Y&R: You're so right about the speed of the show. I love it though. It's so old school, lol!!!

Thanks so much for commenting!! And yeah, it has helped me :) I'll "see" you at the show tonight!!

  11. John: From what little I saw of him on GL, I actually didn't hate Zac, so that says something. And he's certainly better than some people on B&B, that's for sure.

EastEnders: R u forgetting that we're the Kiss Of Death for characters on that show?! LOL! Claire, my Jase, Callum, Suzy (just when she was getting funny!), Honey, Sean, *Danielle*, and now my beloved Bradley!! Heck, I'd even put Archie in there because before they made him a cartoon, he was a Great villian and imo should have stayed on the show. Why are we the Kiss of Death, J??? WHY??? *sniff* From now on I'm going to say that I love Scrunchy Face Stacey, so that way she'll leave the show, lol

Home and Away: I liked what I saw of this, but you know I preferred Neighbours - especially because of my favorite non-couple Donna and Lucas, lol...but it's always such a pain for me to get it online. Have u stopped watching that one?

Y&R: I am really excited to see the recasts. I can't picture Eden and Marcy in the roles yet, but at least they can act, so that's a plus!

    Thank you for your comments!!

  12. EET: Sorry, when I said I'm leaning towards GH, I meant I was leaning towards continuing to watch it, lol. Could I really say good-bye to Sam & JaSam??

Inbal (GH Lover): I love how you get GH scoop on twitter :) If we get more Davis-Cassadine women bonding, I'll be very happy!! :)

  13. @Mel--

Oh I still love Neighbours, and our "non couple" is still waiting to become a couple (IT WILL HAPPEN! I promise one day we will see Lunna!)

I just love H&A but thats probably because its more 'youth' oriented with adult storylines as well... Neighbours really has the most balance imo.

EE KoD!!! I know *tear* Dang it you just rattled off so many people and they all started flashing back to me...Callum !!! I completely blocked him out of my mind! It was to painful to remember him lol.

And who can ever forget our sweet, innocent, lovely Danielle :( DARN YOU D.S. DARN YOU!

  14. Well... I don't especially recommend any of them - just watch all of them for one week and see which soap you want to continue watching! That is my excellent advice LOL
